This Chicken Tikka Masala Macaroni brings together two family favourites: smoky chicken tikka and comforting macaroni. Tender pieces of marinated chicken, colourful vegetables and perfectly cooked pasta are tossed together in a bold tikka masala coating.
It is spicy, satisfying and full of the familiar Pakistani flavours we love—but served in a fun pasta form that both children and adults can enjoy.
A Pakistani Twist on Classic Macaroni
Macaroni may not be traditionally Pakistani, but we certainly know how to give it plenty of flavour! Instead of a creamy or cheese-based sauce, this recipe uses yogurt-marinated chicken, tikka spices, tomatoes and vegetables.
The result is a lightly saucy, masala-coated macaroni with tender chicken in every bite. It makes a complete meal for lunch or dinner and is also a delicious choice for lunchboxes and family gatherings.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Full of smoky and spicy chicken tikka flavour
- Made with simple, everyday ingredients
- Includes chicken, vegetables and pasta in one dish
- Easy to customise according to your preferred spice level
- Perfect for a quick family lunch or dinner
- A delicious way to use leftover cooked macaroni
Choosing the Right Macaroni
Regular elbow macaroni works perfectly for this recipe. You can also use whole-wheat macaroni for extra fibre or replace it with penne, fusilli or any short pasta that holds the masala well.
Cook the macaroni only until al dente. Overcooked pasta can become soft and break apart when tossed with the chicken and vegetables.
How to Make Chicken Tikka Masala Macaroni
Begin by marinating the chicken with yogurt, lemon juice and tikka spices. Even 20 to 30 minutes will help the chicken absorb the flavours, but you can marinate it for longer if time allows.
Cook the marinated chicken until tender and slightly charred around the edges. In the same pan, prepare a quick tomato masala, add the vegetables and finally toss everything together with the boiled macaroni.
Let the macaroni cook in the masala for a couple of minutes so that every piece is properly coated.
Tips for the Best Tikka Masala Macaroni
- Cut the chicken into small, evenly sized pieces so it cooks quickly.
- Do not overcook the macaroni before adding it to the masala.
- Use a wide pan to make tossing the macaroni easier.
- Cook the chicken over medium-high heat to develop lightly charred edges.
- Keep the vegetables slightly crisp for better colour and texture.
- Add reserved pasta water if the macaroni appears too dry.
- Taste before adding extra salt because tikka masala seasoning may already contain salt.

- ½ cup sweetcorn, optional
- 2 to 4 tablespoons reserved pasta water, as needed
- 1 tablespoon fresh coriander, chopped
- 1 green chilli, sliced, optional
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
Marinate the Chicken
- Place the chicken in a mixing bowl.
- Add the yogurt, lemon juice, tikka masala, ginger-garlic paste, red chilli powder, turmeric and salt.
- Mix until every piece of chicken is evenly coated.
- Cover and marinate for at least 30 minutes.
Boil the Macaroni
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the salt.
- Add the macaroni and cook according to the packet instructions until just al dente.
- Reserve about ½ cup of the pasta water before draining.
- Drain the macaroni and set it aside. Do not overcook it.
Cook the Chicken Tikka
- Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
- Add the marinated chicken in a single layer.
- Cook for 7 to 9 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is tender and lightly charred.
- Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate and keep it aside.
Prepare the Masala
- Add the remaining 2 tablespoons oil to the same pan.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and lightly golden.
- Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for about 30 seconds.
- Add the tomatoes and cook until they soften and the excess moisture evaporates.
- Add the tomato paste, red chilli flakes, cumin powder and garam masala. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Add the carrot, capsicum and sweetcorn. Stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes, keeping the vegetables slightly crisp.
Combine Everything
- Return the cooked chicken to the pan and mix it with the masala.
- Add the boiled macaroni and gently toss until everything is evenly combined.
- Add a few tablespoons of reserved pasta water if the macaroni looks dry.
- Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes over low heat so the macaroni absorbs the flavours.
- Finish with lemon juice, chopped coriander and sliced green chilli.
- Serve warm.
Recipe Notes
- Adjust the chilli powder and chilli flakes according to your family’s preference.
- For extra smoky flavour, grill the marinated chicken or cook it in an air fryer before adding it to the macaroni.
- Whole-wheat macaroni can be used instead of regular macaroni.
- Do not add too much pasta water—the finished dish should be moist and well coated, not watery.
- Boneless chicken breast or thigh meat can both be used. Chicken thigh will remain slightly juicier.
- If your tikka masala contains salt, reduce the additional salt accordingly.
Serving Suggestions
Chicken Tikka Masala Macaroni is satisfying enough to serve on its own. You can also pair it with:
- A fresh cucumber and lettuce salad
- Garlic bread
- Lightly steamed vegetables
- Mint yogurt dip
- Lemon wedges and extra chilli flakes
Variations
Creamy Tikka Macaroni
Add ¼ cup cooking cream after the tomato masala has cooked. Keep the heat low and mix well before adding the macaroni.
Cheesy Tikka Macaroni
Sprinkle grated mozzarella or cheddar over the prepared macaroni. Cover the pan for a few minutes until the cheese melts.
Vegetable Tikka Macaroni
Leave out the chicken and add mushrooms, cauliflower, zucchini or paneer for a meat-free version.
Extra-Spicy Version
Add sliced green chillies and an additional pinch of red chilli flakes while preparing the masala.
Storage and Reheating
Store leftover Chicken Tikka Masala Macaroni in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheat it gently in a covered pan or microwave. Add a splash of water before reheating to loosen the masala and prevent the macaroni from drying out.
Freezing is not recommended because the vegetables and pasta may become too soft after thawing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I prepare the chicken in advance?
Yes. You can marinate the chicken and keep it covered in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
Can I use leftover chicken tikka?
Absolutely. Cut the cooked chicken tikka into bite-sized pieces and add it once the tomato masala and vegetables are ready.
Is this macaroni very spicy?
It has a medium level of heat, but you can reduce the chilli powder and omit the green chilli for a milder, kid-friendly version.
Can I use another type of pasta?
Yes. Penne, fusilli, farfalle or any short pasta shape will work well.
Why is my macaroni dry?
